Who We Are

If you're considering a visit to Calvary Baptist Church, you may be wondering what kind of church we are.

We're Baptist in our church polity

Being Baptist is more than a denominational label to us — it reflects core convictions we hold as a church, sometimes remembered by the acrostic B.A.P.T.I.S.T.S:

Biblical Authority — the local church as a whole is in subjection to the Bible, including the pastor.
Autonomy — each congregation operates independently, free from outside organizational control.
Priesthood of Believers — every believer has direct access to Christ, without any human mediator.
Two Offices — the Bible ordains and provides qualifications for pastors and deacons.
Individual Soul Liberty — every person has the freedom to choose the faith their own conscience decides is best.
Saved and Baptized Membership — converts profess personal salvation and are baptized by immersion before joining.
Two Ordinances — baptism and the Lord's Supper are the ordinances Christ gave His church.
Separation of Church and State — the spiritual and governmental authorities remain distinct, each on its own mission.

We're independent and fundamental in our doctrine

"Independent" points to the autonomy of our local church — we answer to no denominational headquarters. "Fundamental" points to our commitment to the fundamentals of the faith:

Inerrancy of Scripture — the 66 books of the Bible are supernaturally inspired and free from error; we use the King James Version.
Deity of Christ — Jesus is, was, and will always be God.
Bodily Resurrection — Jesus literally rose from the dead and walked among His disciples.
Literal Return of Christ — we believe in Christ's personal, imminent, and literal return.

We're traditional in our church practice

You're likely to find a Bible-centred, traditional style of worship with us. We dedicate a significant portion of each service to the reading and preaching of God's Word, and we spend much of our singing time in the great hymns of the faith.

We're a community and family church by design

We strive to be a growing and vibrant church with spiritual life. Yet we also want to be a place where you can know most of the people, have a relationship with the pastor, and get your whole family involved — creche, sensory room, and bus ministry included.

What We Believe

The following statements summarize what we believe and teach as a church. Our overriding aim in all of it is to exalt our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Scriptures

We believe the 66 books of the Bible are supernaturally inspired and free from error. We believe in God's providential preservation of His Word, and we use the King James Version as the most accurate English translation for our congregation.

The Trinity

We believe in one living God, revealed in Scripture as three equal persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — each executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption.

The Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is a Divine Person who convicts, regenerates, and sanctifies believers. We believe that sign gifts such as speaking in tongues and prophecy were temporary, needed only in the infancy of the church.

Satan

We believe Satan is a fallen angel who became the malignant prince of the power of the air, and who is destined for eternal justice in Hell.

Creation

We accept the Genesis creation account literally and not allegorically or figuratively, rejecting evolutionary theory in favor of direct divine creation.

The Virgin Birth

We believe Jesus was begotten of the Holy Spirit in a miraculous manner, and born of Mary, a virgin.

The Atonement

We believe Christ's death constituted the voluntary substitution of Himself in the sinner's place — the Just dying for the unjust.

The New Birth

We believe salvation requires being born again — an experience that is instantaneous, not a process — brought about wholly and solely by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Justification

We believe believers receive pardon of sin and the gift of eternal life through faith in the Redeemer's blood, and not through works.

Repentance and Faith

We believe repentance and faith are inseparable graces, involving genuine contrition, confession, and supplication, combined with heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Church

We believe a church is a congregation of baptized (by immersion in water) believers, governed by Christ through the Holy Spirit, with pastors and deacons as its officers, having the absolute right of self-government free from the interference of any hierarchy.

Baptism

We believe Christian baptism is the immersion in water of a born-again believer, and is a prerequisite for proper church membership.

The Lord's Table

We believe the Lord's Table is an ordinance where believers commemorate Christ's death, restricted to baptized, active members after self-examination.

Perseverance

We believe true believers endure unto the end and are kept by the power of God through faith unto eternal salvation.

The Return of Christ

We affirm Christ's bodily resurrection, ascension, and future return. We believe in a pre-tribulational, imminent coming for the church, and Christ's subsequent pre-millennial return to the earth to establish His kingdom for one thousand years.

Missions and Giving

We believe the Great Commission calls us to make individual disciples of all nations. We practice tithing as biblical giving, bringing the tithe into the common treasury of the church.

God's Grace in Salvation

We believe Christ died for all, and that God's salvation is extended to all who will believe — we do not hold to doctrines of limited atonement or unconditional election.

Our Church Covenant

As a church family we covenant together to maintain Christian fellowship, support the ministry financially, practice family worship, live free from intoxicating substances and pornography, and pursue reconciliation with one another without delay.
